How to sell a car by owner
Selling a car privately starts with a clear record of what you own and its condition. Prepare the details, photos and paperwork before listing so the next steps are easier to manage.

Confirm the year, make, model and trim
Start with the vehicle and its paperwork. Record the year, make, model, trim if known, body style, mileage and units. Check the actual equipment instead of assuming every car with the same badge has the same options.
For an EV or hybrid, describe the charging equipment included and any battery or charging information you can document. Keep estimates separate from measured or documented facts.
Gather records and describe the condition
Organize service records, keys, manuals and recent repair receipts. Note known damage, warning lights, mechanical issues, modifications and upcoming maintenance. Remove personal information from any documents you plan to share publicly.
Describe exterior wear, interior condition, tire condition and any known repair needs. A concise, specific disclosure is more useful than calling the vehicle perfect.
Set an asking price with relevant comparisons
Compare vehicles with similar age, mileage, condition and equipment in your area. Compare the same body style and powertrain where possible. Advertised prices are asking prices, not proof of completed sale values.
State the total asking price clearly. Explain negotiability and included equipment, and update the price consistently wherever you advertise.
Show the vehicle clearly
Use current photographs of the vehicle you are selling. Start with a front three-quarter view, then show every side, the interior, odometer, cargo space and known wear. Keep the lighting natural and avoid filters that hide condition.
Follow the car and truck listing photo checklist before uploading. Choose a clear cover and arrange the rest in an order that makes the vehicle easy to understand.
Write a useful private-sale listing
Lead with year, make, model and verified trim. Follow with mileage, important equipment, service history, condition and what is included. Explain why you are selling if you want to, but do not let a long story replace the vehicle facts.
Create a private draft, review every field and photo, then check the current listing offer before submitting. Car Truck Buy Sell provides classified advertising; the vehicle sale and handoff are arranged directly between buyer and seller.
Prepare for buyer questions and visits
Keep answers consistent with the listing and update the ad when new information matters. Agree on a practical meeting location and inspection plan. Before a test drive, check driver eligibility and insurance arrangements rather than assuming coverage.
Allow time for an independent inspection if agreed with the buyer. Keep keys and original documents under your control until the agreed payment and transfer process is complete.
Plan the paperwork, payment and handoff
Before agreeing to a handoff, check the title and any lien with the relevant parties. Ask your lender how a payoff and title release would work if you still owe money.
Use USAGov’s state motor vehicle directory to find the actual title, odometer, plate and notice-of-sale requirements where the transaction takes place. Keep copies of the completed paperwork and agreed terms.
Arrange a payment-verification process with your bank. A check balance showing as available does not establish that a check is genuine. The FTC’s fake-check guidance explains why overpayments and requests to return money are warning signs.
Once the transfer is complete, remove personal belongings, paired phones, navigation addresses and connected-service access, and update your listing to sold.
